Jivamukti Yoga is a vinyāsa-based method founded in New York City in 1984 by David Life and Sharon Gannon. The Sanskrit word jīvanmukti means liberation while still embodied — and the method is explicitly designed to support that aim through breath, ethical living, devotional practice and the study of yoga's foundational texts. Every Jivamukti class is structured around five pillars: shastra (scripture — Yoga Sūtras, Bhagavad Gītā, Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā), bhakti (devotion, expressed primarily through chanting), ahimsā (non-violence applied to a vegan lifestyle, animal advocacy and environmental responsibility), nāda (music and conscious sound integrated into the practice), and dhyāna (silent meditation). A standard 90-minute Open Class typically opens with chanting, presents the global "Focus of the Month" (a theme set by Sharon Gannon and taught in every affiliated studio worldwide that month), moves through a vigorous vinyāsa sequence aligned with ujjayī breath, and closes with a short meditation and savāsana — all carried by a carefully curated soundtrack. Four class formats — Open, Basic, Spiritual Warrior and Beginner Vinyasa — make the method accessible at different levels. The 300-hour Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Training is registered with Yoga Alliance and includes a residential intensive followed by mentorship. The school's flagship NYC studio closed in 2020, but the method continues to be taught by certified teachers in affiliated studios around the world and at the Wild Woodstock Forest Sanctuary ashram in upstate New York.
