FaroLymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic therapeutic massage technique that stimulates lymph circulation in the body, promoting toxin elimination, oedema reduction and immune system strengthening. Developed in the 1930s by Danish physiotherapist Dr Emil Vodder, the Vodder method remains the world reference for manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). In Switzerland, this technique is widely practised by physiotherapists, massage therapists and trained aestheticians in private practices and clinics across Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Bern and throughout the country. Lymphatic drainage consists of light-pressure, slow, circular movements following the path of lymphatic vessels and nodes. The therapist works with very gentle pressure — approximately 30 to 40 mmHg — sufficient to stimulate lymph flow without compressing tissues. Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and provide a deep sensation of relaxation and lightness. Lymphatic drainage is medically indicated for lymphoedema (primary or secondary, particularly after breast cancer surgery), post-operative oedema, chronic venous insufficiency, heavy legs, water retention, cellulite, chronic sinusitis and immune system disorders. It is also widely used in aesthetics to improve skin quality, reduce under-eye puffiness and aid recovery after cosmetic procedures. In Portugal, lymphatic drainage is practised in physiotherapy clinics, wellness centres and beauty institutes across Lisbon, Porto, Braga and other major cities.
