Holotropic breathwork is an intense breathing technique developed by Czech psychiatrist Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina in the 1970s, as an alternative to psychedelic therapy. The term 'holotropic' means 'moving toward wholeness'. The method combines accelerated deep breathing, carefully selected evocative music and targeted bodywork to induce non-ordinary states of consciousness promoting emotional healing, trauma resolution and psyche exploration. Sessions take place in groups, in pairs (a 'breather' and a 'sitter'), lasting 2-3 hours.
